I just passed my 2-year mark retiring from active duty as a Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy. When I was looking into retiring after 20.9 years, a few months shy of 21 I tried to find what resources were available but it was a lot of hearsay and paths that lead to no-where. Don't get me wrong most of the information I got was good, it was just never really easy to come by.
This led me to create what I call the Transitioning Service Members Cheat Sheet. It started out with about two pages that were centered on Information Technology and CyberSecurity because that is what I was looking for post-military.
Over time this Cheatsheet has grown to just shy of 9 pages with 70,000 downloads and over 110k views. I try and make it a habit to update/validate the Cheatsheet every few months with new additions, removals, or like my current plan is the re-organization of the cheatsheet.
I have started to build it into a step-by-step, with the most critical items (the ones I believe) are at the top, and then from there it gets broken out to three sections:
-Someone looking to move into the Private Sector
-Someone looking to move into Contracting
-Someone looking to move in Civilian/Government work
In the above three sections, I try and provide once again what I believe are the most critical pieces to help you navigate that path.
Over time I have asked and received a lot of suggestions and support, and this is what keeps the cheatsheet alive, knowing that it is still valuable and relevant two years later. The link for the Cheat Sheet is Transitioning Service Members Cheat Sheet
