Decrease in miles after tires replaced on VW E-Golf

About two weeks ago I needed to get some new front tires, as they were getting pretty worn, made the mistake of missing a few rotations.  The back still looked good, but I was having a hard time finding the same style tires that were currently in my car (had a limited time frame to get them done).

So I replaced all four tires with what is probably a lesser quality, and the first thing I noticed was a reduction in distance per charge.  At first, I thought it might have been something with my replacement EV charger (maybe it was not setup correctly?, but I verified the settings). 

Next, I wondered if it was because I was driving to a different location for the week.  Roughly still the same distance, just a different location.  I drive about 40 miles each way (80 total) a day.  With the old tires, I would come home with between 48-56 miles left on the car, which I know is just a rough number. 

But last week I was arriving home with 35 miles, I shook it off and decided to wait till this week, where I will be driving to my main work site.  Today I arrived home with 36 miles, so I think I will have to go with the tires being the reason for the decrease in distance.

New Juicebox in the house

I received my new Juicebox (2nd under warranty) today.  It's slightly different then the version I had been using, but that's probably due to age.   This one has a slightly shorter wall wart plug (I actually measured it because it's bolted to the wall at the length of the first Juicebox.

I don't remember the length of the first, but I know the second was short (12 inches roughly), while the new one is about 10 1/2 inches, the connection just barely fit without me having to move the wall connectors to a new location.

The second part different is the J1772 cable to the car.  The old cable was probably about 0 AWG and the new one is about 8 AWG (this is just a guess though), and the cable is a little longer maybe 2-4ft. 

The only real concern was that once plugged in does it work, and yes I was able to charge tonight without having to drive to a Level 3 before putting it on a Level 1 for the rest of the night.  So that was nice, and I also did not have to put a deposit on this RMA device.

JuiceBox Stopped charging

The first thing I bought before I got my electric car was a Level 2 charger for my garage.  After much research, I went with the JuiceBox Pro 40 by Enel X.  It used to be owned by EmotorWorks, but recently (say last year) I think they were bought out.   

The Pro 40 was Wifi-enabled, so I could set up schedules to use it during the time of use (TOU) based on my electric company schedule for Super Off-Peak.  I guess I could have done it with my car setup, but it was nice to have a web interface provided by Pro 40.  

Overall the device has been great, I did have to have it replaced under warranty already once due to possible overheating of the device.  This second device seems to be working great up until today.  After doing some reading on the company website it looks like it could be an easy fix something to do with the lever in the J1772 handle.  


I have sent in a trouble ticket with the company to see what they recommend in the meantime I am down to a level 1 charger in my garage, and from the looks of it, I will need to charge for 16 hours after a normal day of driving.   Whereas my Level 2 would take just under 4 hours to charge the same distant.

Hope to get this resolved soon.
