MakerSpaceSD Meetup: 11 Feb

Another Saturday, and an appearance at the @MakerSpaceSD meetup at Lestat's on Adams.  We had a good showing today with about 10 folks total who showed up over the few hours we were there.  We have made some great strides in founding this MakerSpace with Tax ID, Bank Account, and Paypal account.  

We can now start collecting funds under the @MakerSpaceSD name, along with any donations that might come our way (PayPal) (at least I believe we can at this time, I may be wrong here). We have folks working on setting up a website which should be live soon.   MakerSpaceSD.org and MakerSpaceSD.info I believe are the ones that we are going to get.  If these are wrong please advise so that I can change them up.

Thanks to one of our members we may have a home for a few months while we get ourselves setup.  Some of us will be taking a trip out there sometime tomorrow to check out the space and see how it fits.

Makerspace SD: Looking for a Space

Makerspace San Diego has been having pretty regular meet-ups at the local Coffee shop for about 2 months now, and have a solid group of about six that are interested in taking it to the next level.  We are currently looking for a space in and around San Diego to call home.

With a small core of member present in the Makerspace it does not give us a lot of reserve to pay for an expensive place, but because we are living in San Diego I am not sure we will find something that would fit our projected price ranges.   Starting we are looking for something in the 500$ range, and will go from there.

Everyone currently involved are pretty new at this, so as we start the Makerspace for San Diego we will be reaching out to others who have gone before us for guidance.  If anyone has questions please leave a comment.  

Treasure Finder: Update 1

Its getting close to Christmas and with that I do not think that I will be starting this until after the holidays, but I wanted to update the folks that have been coming here on its status.  I have made a few purchases for the parts that  I will be using and have been making slow "cosmetic" changes to what I want it to look like.

I have been in talks with a member of MakerSpaceSD on making the round disk out of a 3D in plastic, right now in the initial design stages using Google Sketchup.  Once I have verified it looks good and will function correctly it will be time to send it to the printer.  Below is the initial design.  I have to rework the center piece I believe to be able to fit the reference coil, and also be able to attach to the pole.


Next is the pole that  I will using instead of the wood pole used in the original.  I am going to try and get the end bent like what I see as a metal detector and add a grip at the bend.  Maybe have a arm brace on the end.  This is a 6 Ft pole that has an extension on it, and a plastic end used to add attachments.  I picked it up at Home Depot.  I figured I could make another piece in the printer that would be able to be screwed in (not sure how difficult that would be) and then have that with like a ball joint so that the base could swivel around.

I stopped by Radio Shack and picked up two more pieces, many more needed.  The first will be the enclosure for the circuit board, and the second is the circuit board.  The enclosure is plastic, and cost about 5$, and the board was also about 5$.  I think so far I have about 15$ dollars in this with probably a lot more the initially planned because I am going a little off course on the design.  Hope it all works out in the end.

MakerSpaceSD Meetup

Saturday we had a MakerSpace SD meetup over in San Diego from about 10-11am.  One of the members brought his Prusa 3D Printers to show it off to the rest of the gang.  We had about 4 people show up, a different lot from last week's group so that was good.

John came prepared with a few Token's that he created the night before, and then showed the group how the printer works which was pretty cool.

After that we discussed some of the projects we were all thinking about and looking for possible places to hold the meeting's, I think we have one other place to check out next week.   Hopefully more people will show with more toys to try out.

Overall it was a great 2nd meeting, as I missed the first one.
